About the Department of Early Modern History

The Department of Early Modern History, within the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy of Ghent University, has built a lot of expertise in the socio-economic, cultural, political-institutional and non-western history of the 16th-18th centuries. Focuses lie on historical demography, cultural life during the Renaissance, history of universities and intellectual life, history of science, history of cartography, political and institutional history of the Early Modern period, rural economy, European overseas expansion and maritime history.
