The Centre of the 0verseas archives preserves two sets
of archives with different administrative and archival
- The archives of the ministries in charge of the French
settlements in India from the XVIIth century to the XXth
- archives transferred from the former settlements and
from Algeria at the time of the independences between
1954 and 1962, with the exception of the archives of management
stayed in the concerned countries.
CAOM also preserves private and company archives related
to overseas as well as a library, and sets of ancient
maps and an items specialized on overseas.
André Chamson, general manager of the Archives
of France, chose to implant to Aix-en-Provence a service
of the overseas archives as ended the decolonizations
and where was built in Aix-en-Provence a university pole.
The building, inaugurated in 1966, was enlarged in 1986
The centre possesses, spaces of reception of the public,
spaces reserved for the consultation with room of the
inventories, reading room of 90 places, reading room of
microfilms, multimedia room, spaces of conservation and
sorting on 5 floors of shops equipped with sets of shelves
and with adapted furniture, laboratories of photography
and restoration, as well as the offices of the administration.
The CAOM, one of the 5 National Centres of Archives in
France, is a public utility the wealth of capital of which
consists of 37 kilometres of public and private archives,
60 000 maps and plans, of 80 0000 photos and 100 000 works
of library. Numerous projects of digitalization with on-line
publishing are in progress, with foreign partners (Algeria,
Canada, India) or DOM-TOM regional government.
